Critical Mass. Starting around 6pm, wheels down at 7pm, Union Square (14th street side) in Manhattan, ending at city hall. Sixty to 90 minutes of peaceful protesting.
If you ride a bike, you should come. If someone you know rides a bike, they should join too. This affects everyone
This peaceful, open-invite ride calls on all New Yorkers to stand up against the criminalization of cycling, racialized policing, and policies that put immigrant lives at risk.
While drivers who commit the same traffic violations continue to receive standard tickets, cyclists, many of them immigrants and delivery workers, now face the threat of arrest, criminal records, and mandatory court appearances for minor infractions like rolling through red lights or stop signs. In 2024, 96% of criminal summonses to cyclists were issued to people of color, and the enforcement is concentrated in neighborhoods where low-income and undocumented riders live and work.
The city claims this policy promotes safety, but in New York, cyclists account for less than 0.5% of pedestrian injuries, while drivers kill over 100 pedestrians per year. This new policy may be a political maneuver aligned with federal pressure to remove undocumented immigrants from urban centers. A court summons can lead to immigration detention and deportation, putting thousands of riders in immediate danger.
We ride to defend our right to the street, our right to safety, and our right to exist without fear. Streets should not be used as a tool for displacement or surveillance. We demand an immediate end to this policy, and investment in real safety: protected bike lanes, fair labor protections, and immigrant
justice.
